The thyroid gland is a butterfly – shaped organ and is composed of two cone-like lobes or wings, connected via the isthmus. The thyroid gland controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins and controls how sensitive the body is to other hormones.

These hormones regulate the rate of metabolism and affect the growth and rate of function of many other systems in the body. Excess hormone production results in hyperthyroidism and decrease in hormone production results in hypothyroidism. Apart from these thyroid gland can also be affected with malignancies.

Thyroid Surgery Procedures

The common surgeries performed at the department of Endocrine Surgery are:
  • Hemithyroidectomy
  • Total Thyroidectomy
  • Total Thyroidectomy with central compartment neck dissection
  • Total Thyroidectomy with central compartment and Modified radical neck dissection
  • Sternotomy and thyroidectomy for Retrosternal thyroid
  • Parathyroid autotransplantation in selected cases of thyroidectomy
  • Endoscopic thyroidectomy

Patients who undergo procedures 1 and 2 are selectively discharged within 24 hours of surgery (Day Care thyroid surgery)
